Configure Gallery Advertising

There are two types of galleries. Different advertising sizes and behavior are offered depending on the gallery type chosen.

Slideshow Gallery Advertising

Slideshow galleries display inline. They include the dots/number style, thumbnail style and paginated thumb style.

By default, all IAB ads on a slideshow gallery page refresh as a user advances through the slideshow gallery.

In addition to the ads that appear around the gallery, galleries can be configured to present an additional ad between slides as a website visitor advances through the slideshow.

Note: Editors can also choose to disable the in-gallery ad on a per article basis.

To edit your slideshow gallery ad settings:

  1. Go to Advertisements > Ad Settings
  2. In the Gallery Slideshow Ad Slot pulldown menu select an ad object to appear
(Note: the ad size most commonly used is a gallery specific 300×250, as it will appear correctly on all devices)
  3. Choose how often the ad is inserted (every other slide up to every 10th slide)

Lightbox Gallery Advertising

Lightbox galleries are used for Mosaic Galleries and single images in articles.

The lightbox galleries display a banner ad (commonly set to 728×90 on desktop and 300×50 on smaller devices) below the images in the gallery. The ad refreshes as a website visitor advances through the slideshow.

Note: Editors can also choose to disable the in-gallery ad on a per article basis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I set how often the ad is inserted into the slideshow gallery on a per article basis?

No. At this time, it is a universal setting.

If I have a gallery with five slides and the in-gallery ad is set to every 5th slide, will I get an ad?

No.  There must be at least one more image in the gallery than the in-gallery ad setting for an in-gallery ad to appear.

Can I target the my in-gallery ad to control the order the ads appear?

Yes, the user is cookied when they start the gallery. As each in-gallery ad is served a keyword is passed to DFP indicating the number of ads shown.

This is useful if you want to target the first ad in the slideshow or if advertisers want the ads to tell a sequential story as the user moves through the gallery.

For helpful information on targeting and keywords read the web targeting guide.
